Three Science Projects

If you assemble your materials ahead of time, you can do any or all of the projects with Ms. Maria.  Or you can watch Ms. Maria and then do the projects later.  Below you'll find the list of materials you need for each project.

1. Gas Makes a Getaway

  • 1 unopened bottle/can of a clear (if possible) carbonated drink (seltzer, 7-Up, ginger ale, etc.; darker carbonated beverages also work but you may not be able to see as well)
  • 1 or 2 clear cups/glasses, medium to tall
  • 3-6 grapes (any color)
  • paper towels
  • Optional: a few raisins, a spoonful of sugar

2. Walking Water:  Cohesion and Adhesion

  • a roll of waxed paper (we’ll only use about 6-8 inches)
  • 2-3 colors of liquid food coloring (optional, but more fun)
  • 2-3 small cups
  • about 1 cup of water in a measuring cup
  • a small metal spoon
  • paper towels

 3. Simple Machines:  a Lever

  • a ruler or other flat stick about 10” - 14”  (you can use a jumbo popsicle stick, but it’s best to use something a little longer)
  • 2 small metal or plastic spoons
  • 1 - 2 rubber bands or some tape (rubber bands are easier)
  • a wooden spoon
  • a “fat” marker or spool of thread, or something about that circumference
  • 2 - 3 cottonballs and/or pompoms and/or a few pieces of dry cereal (Cheerios, etc.)
  • Optional:  2 - 3 small plastic bowls (like cereal bowls)
