The Montessori classroom is typically called the "environment." It is the environment in which the child will explore and learn. It is kept orderly and attractive. All of the furniture and materials are child sized, inviting a child to explore and respond to his inner needs, his "sensitive periods."
In a well run Montessori school, the teacher is not the center of attention. The child is free to choose work and "teach" himself through the use of specially designed Montessori materials. These materials are grouped into specialized areas of the classroom, beginning with Practical Life and leading to learning exercises in Language and Math.
Details of specific materials in classroom areas are: Practical Life, Sensorial, Mathematics, Science, Music and Art, Geography and Language.
